Miguel Libarnes, curates Repurposing Curiosa, opening at Fuchs Projects in August 2nd, 2013.
Repurposing Curiosa is an anatomization of pornography and its omnipresence in gay culture. An international group of queer artists—Miguel Libarnes, Cupid Ojala, Richard Wagner, and Jade Yumang—carefully lay open this subject to discern the functions and relationships of porn with the outside world. The exhibition dissects the erotic to examine its internal structure from multiple perspectives, revealing a feature of the human condition that is both exalting and humbling.
The works in this exhibition range from Libarnes’ large-scale lenticular prints and paintings to Ojala’s “Hair Pattern Drawings,” from Wagner’s impressions on tape to Yumang’s installations and intricate magazine cutouts, all works that expose curiosa in a different light.
Miguel Libarnes was born and raised in the Philippines. At the age of 18, he moved to the U.S.A. and studied visual arts at UC Santa Cruz. He now resides in Brooklyn, New York. Focusing on his identity as a queer, Filipino surfer with a highly conservative Catholic upbringing, he aims to blend this mixture of conflicting cultures through art.
